Read the new and enhanced "Specification for Environmental Management" to know requirements and accountabilities for environmental risk mitigation.

Important News

One of PDO’s major challenges is to deliver growth, competitive performance and operational and project delivery excellence, while effectively managing the environmental impacts associated with oil and gas production. A new and enhanced environmental management specification responds to these demands and is integral to PDO’s success. Essential elements of the specification are simplicity, clarity and a drive towards sustainable environmental improvement.

This specification consolidates and replaces four existing environmental specifications and aims to provide a starting point towards understanding and managing environmental risks in new projects and existing assets. The specification is sub-divided into nine individual sections, each focusing on different environmental risk areas. Each of the nine sections lists mandatory requirements and organisational accountabilities to mitigate and manage those risks.

What You Need to Know

Managing the Risk:

Protection of the environment and a need to respond to PDO’s current and future environmental risks led to the development of a simplified environmental management specification. This specification provides mandatory company-level requirements and accountabilities.

Continuous Improvement:

In line with the corporate strategy of continuous improvement and simplification, this specification consolidates and replaces four existing specifications (SP-1005, SP-1006, SP-1007 and SP-1009). The specification contains nine sections; and each section is efficiently summarised into one page for clarity.

Focus areas:

  • Flaring & Venting
  • Air Emissions
  • Greenhouse Gas & Energy Management
  • Ozone Depleting Substances
  • Soil & Groundwater Contamination
  • Water
  • Waste Management
  • Impact Assessment
  • Performance Monitoring & Reporting

PDO seeks a high standard of environmental performance with the aim of promoting the long-term benefits to its shareholders, its employees and the society of Oman as a whole. To achieve this, a holistic environmental strategy was endorsed in 2015 to attain compliance with regulatory and corporate requirements, as well as the adoption of international standards and best practices. This environmental strategy, appropriately, identified the need to revise and redraft the environmental management specification with an objective to simplify while addressing all the environmental risks.

In the beginning of 2015, an independent review of our existing specifications was commissioned to benchmark against international best practices. In parallel, an extensive internal assessment of environmental risks, mitigation and opportunities was conducted. These two foundational activities led to the development of an initial draft of specification for environmental management. Finally, thorough engagements with different teams at all levels of the organisation were conducted to seek feedback on this specification.

This extensive exercise resulted in consolidation of four existing environmental specifications into a single specification for environmental management. The specification provides a starting point towards understanding and managing environmental risks in new projects and existing assets.
The new specification can be accessed via link on PDO HSE webpage. Please feel free to contact MSE 2 team for any feedback and questions.
