New HSE Training
A review had many expressing concerns that the training didn't provide a beneficial learning experience so in partnership with you we redesigned it. Before many people failed to learn as it was too complex so we have  adopted the reflective learning philosophy. Images replaced words and the trainer facilitates group self learning. We minimised pre-requisites prohibiting people attending the courses critical for their roles.
 

   

Emphasis on competency
The new learning ladder emphasises the legal requirements a contractor should fulfill in his legal duty of care.  This includes, the induction into the contractor HSE system, rules within the contractor, the location HSE induction where he will work,  the training/familiarization in the equipment he will use and training in the procedures. After which is the competency assessment to ensure he is competent to work safely.

What's the result?:

On the 1st August 2015 the old Induction (IND), Dealing with Hazards and Risks (DHR), and Initial Fire Response (IFR) courses have been retired and replaced with a new HSE Orientation course (ORT). The HSE Tools and Skille were also retired.

Grandfather rights:

People with in date DHR & IFR on the 31st July will not need to attend a refresher. Those non compliant people  will have to attend the HSE Orientation to become compliant after which they will not need to attend any refresher.

Scaffolding Courses removed:

SP1157 has had all the scaffolding courses removed as the changes to Working at Height specification SP1257 requires all contractors to be certified to CITB standards, thus making the non CITB training redundant.

Price reductions
The training providers have agreed to provide all contractors with an across the board discount.

  1. RO158 to RO124  - coastal courses
  2. RO96 to RO72  - interior courses at PDO training centre or contractor premises.
  3. RO96 to RO84  - interior courses in ATP owned premises
The training providers have been banned from entertaining demands from PDO contractors for additional discounts on any new courses. If they are found to have done so then they will be prohibited from all further training with PDO.  This is to ensure all contractors benefit from the lower pricing rather than large contractors benefiting at the expense of others.
 

 

Supervisor HSE courses to be revamped
We plan to retire the old supervisor courses SLS and SLM course in Q4 2015 along with the Coaching and Mentoring CMC. The HSE Tools and Skills course HTS has already been retired and all the existing supervisor courses will be replaced with a new HSE Leadership course program, based on what makes a good HSE leader. This will be modularized and different types of leaders will have to attend different modules. It will include reflective learning, environmental management, leadership skills, dealing with conflict, risk management, behavioural based safety, asset integrity, PTW and management of change. 
 

 

H2S courses to switch back
In Q4 2015 the H2S course will revert back to its previous format of a half day course for sour operations using contract emergency escape equipment and then an additional half day course for anyone working in an Emergency Planning Zone, with PDO equipment.  This will improve efficiency and ensure people receive training on the most appropriate equipment. There will also be a stronger emphasis on practical training and less on the theory.
