ISO 14001 - Environmental Management System
PDO achieved ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) certification in 1999 to become one of the few oil and gas companies to be certified at that time.  Maintaining the certificate entails undergoing independent assessment of the EMS on an annual basis. This year’s assessment will happen by the end of this month and the beginning of April. In this article, we aim to provide an overview on the ISO 14001 system and highlight its key benefits to PDO.

What is it about?
The ISO 14001 sets out the criteria for an EMS. It aims to improve resource efficiency, reduce waste, and drive down costs. ISO 14001 provides assurance to company management and employees as well as external stakeholders that environmental impact is being measured and improved. Rather than focusing on exact measures and goals of environmental performance, the ISO 14001 standard highlights what an organisation needs to do to meet these goals.
Similar to any management system, the ISO 14001 is based on the Plan-Do-Check-Review-Improve cycle.

What You Need to Know

Plan and Do cycle:

The Plan cycle deals with the beginning stages of an organisation becoming ISO 14001-compliant. The Do cycle is the implementation and operation of the ISO 14001 standard within an organization.

Check and Review cycle:

The Check cycle deals with checking and correcting errors. The Review cycle is a review of the entire process by the organisation's top management and the Improve cycle never ends as an organisation continually finds ways to improve its EMS.

Plan for 2015:

Surveillance audit by LRQA covering operational activitities in Qarn Alam and Bahja areas.

What are the benefits of ISO 14001?
The current standard, to which PDO is certified, is ISO 14001-2004. This system standard is currently under review and a new version is expected by the end of 2015.
Some of the benefits for using ISO 14001-2004 include:

  • Continual improvement of the EMS
  • Reduced cost (e.g. waste management, discharges and releases)
  • Independent assessment

  • Savings in consumption of energy and materials
  • Improved corporate image among regulators, customers and the public.
Over time, the ISO 14001 has significantly improved PDO’s EMS and contractors’ performance. The current ISO 14001-2004 certificate was issued to PDO by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) after a thorough re-certification assessment in April 2014 and is valid for a three-year period.

PDO has developed a comprehensive HSE Management System (CP-122) which incorporates the requirements of ISO 14001-2004. The HSE Policy incorporates the requirements of the ISO 14001 system standard. The policy calls for compliance with legal requirements so that no harm is posed to people and the environment. One of the key requirements of the ISO 14001 is to develop an Environmental Aspect and Impact register.  Aspect identification is important, since it is from this identification of the potential to impact the environment that the rest of the EMS is built.
