ISO 14001 - Environmental Management System
PDO achieved ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) certification since 1999 to be one of the few oil and gas companies to be certified during that time. Maintaining the certificate entails undergoing independent assessment of the EMS on annual basis. This year’s assessment will happen by end March and beginning of April 2015. Through this article we aim to provide an overview on the ISO 14001 system and highlight the key benefits of the system to PDO.

What ISO 14001 is all about?
The ISO 14001 sets out the criteria for an EMS. It aims to improve resource efficiency, reduce waste, and drive down costs. Using ISO 14001 provides assurance to company management and employees as well as external stakeholders that environmental impact is being measured and improved. Rather than focusing on exact measures and goals of environmental performance, the ISO 14001 standard highlights what an organization needs to do to meet these goals.Similar to any management system, the ISO 14001 is based on the Plan-Do-Check-Review-Improve cycle.

What You Need to Know

The Plan and Do cycle:

The Plan cycle deals with the beginning stages of an organization becoming ISO 14001-compliant. The Do cycle is the implementation and operation of the ISO 14001 standard within an organization. .

The Check and Revie cycle:

The Check cycle deals with checking and correcting errors. The Review cycle is a review of the entire process by the organization's top management and the Improve cycle never ends as an organization continually finds ways to improve their EMS.

What are the benefits of ISO 14001?

The current standard, to which PDO is certified, is ISO 14001-2004. This system standard is currently under review and a new version is expected by end of 2015.
Some of the benefits for using ISO 14001- 2004 include:

  • Continual improvement of the EMS
  • Reduced cost (e.g. waste management, discharges and releases)
  • Independent assessment

  • Savings in consumption of energy and materials
  • Improved Corporate image among regulators, customers and the public
Over the time, the ISO 14001 has significantly improved PDO EMS and its contractors. The current ISO 14001:2004 certificate was issued to PDO by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance (LRQA)” after a through recertification assessment in April 2014 and is valid for 3 years period.

PDO has developed a comprehensive HSE Management System (CP-122) which incorporates the requirements of ISO 14001:2004. The HSE Policy incorporates the requirements of the ISO 14001 system standard. The policy calls for compliance with legal requirement and pose no harm to people and environment. One of the key requirements of the ISO 14001 is to develop an Environmental Aspect “and Impact register.  Aspects identification is important, since it is from this identification of the potential to impact the environment that the rest of the environmental management system is built.
